ICD Codes, What are Those? Flash Briefing

I’ve seen these funny, numerical codes sometimes in my medical paperwork, but didn’t pay much attention. They looked like arcane “office speak” to me, something the accounting department needs for my bill. In fact, I’ve learned these ICD codes are very important in many ways. Yes, they might be used in billing, but they are also used in insurance, treatment plans, research, approval of treatment options, and much more. ICD codes, it turns out, are VERY important.

As a medical records director in a 114 bed facility for 27 years, I also did all the coding for all dx and proceedures.
