  • Preparing for a natural disaster with LEMS

    Good morning all!

Here in Virginia, we are gearing up for hurricane season which begins in June and ends on November 30th.

You may not be in the region for hurricanes, but there are several other natural disasters that could wreak havoc on our homes and our life with LEMS.

    Other natural disasters include:

    • Fires
    • Tornadoes
    • Flood
    • Tsunami
    • Avalanche
    • Earthquakes
    • Landslide
    • Sandstorm

Sometimes a disaster happens unexpectedly, but we should all be prepared to “hunker down” or evacuate when need be.

The CDC has some tips about emergency preparedness for those with chronic illness

One of the main takeaways is to be sure you have at least 2 weeks of medications and any medical supplies you need, as well as food and water. Some people keep a “go bag” ready if they should need it, but that can be hard to do with our medications.

I also recommend keeping your passport and other important documents together as well as a list of your medications and written numbers for your doctors (in the event that you lose power or can’t use your cell phone).

The “Seated View,” another blog for chronic illness has some more information on emergency preparedness with chronic illness, you can check out here

    • Where do you live and what extreme weather do you need to be prepared for?
    • What extra steps do you take to accommodate for having LEMS or your other chronic illnesses?
      • (Do you have medical equipment or medication that you need to bring?)
    • What does your emergency plan look like?
    • Are there any other items that you feel are necessary for an emergency situation?
