Toxic Positivity
Toxic Positivity is defined as ” an obsession with positive thinking. It is the belief that people should put a positive spin on all experiences, even those that are profoundly tragic,” by Medical News Today.
Recently, I’ve seen many articles written by chronic illness patients who have experienced toxic positivity.
I truly believe having a positive outlook can help you feel better physically and mentally, and science has also proven this.
An article posted on The Mighty recently said it best. “However, believing you can magically think yourself well can complicate your recovery when you feel pressured to deny your reality and pretend you’ve improved when your body aches like a truck ran over it.”
I have experienced toxic positivity from my peers, coworkers and sometimes even family members. I think I might be a little guilty of unintentionally doing this as well to my fellow chronic illness friends.
Have you ever experienced toxic positivity?
How has it affected you and how do you handle it?
