For many people, navigating disability benefits or workplace/school accommodations becomes an important part of managing life with LEMS. But the process of applying for help—whether through Social Security Disability (SSDI), workplace accommodations (ADA), or educational supports (504/IEP plans) —can be confusing, frustrating, and slow.

LEMS is rare (as we all know), and not all evaluators understand its impact. Clear documentation and persistence can make a big difference. Some people with LEMS may still work part-time with accommodations, while others qualify for full disability. Disability support can provide financial assistance and reduce stress—but obtaining it often requires self-advocacy.

    Some Tips:

Keep a symptom journal and track how your condition affects your daily life.

Ask your neurologist to provide a detailed letter explaining your limitations and diagnosis.

Be prepared to explain how symptoms like fatigue, weakness, and medication side effects limit function—even if they’re “invisible.”

Have you navigated the disability process or requested accommodations because of LEMS? Share your story. Your experience could make this journey easier for someone else.

If so, What advice would you give to someone just starting the disability or accommodation process?
