The corticosteroid, prednisone and LEMS
The corticosteroid, prednisone, is often given to Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome patients as part of their treatment plan. Prednisone is a very powerful anti-inflammatory used for a variety of inflammation causing conditions. Personally, I’ve never used it in conjunction with LEMS, but have used it for refractory asthma and severe gout attacks. It’s very effective. If you’ve taken prednisone before, you know there’s always a taper to get off the med without causing problems. Tapering off too quickly can result in unwanted difficulties. Also, if you take prednisone long term, be aware of it’s long term side-effects. They can be substantial, and always follow the advice of your neurologist when taking it long term, or beginning a taper from a short course.
Here’s an article from one patient who had problems, tapering off prednisone too quickly.https://myastheniagravisnews.com/columns/2021/10/13/prednisone-tapering-too-quickly-hospital/
