Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by chronic fatigue and muscle weakness, among other symptoms. Fatigue and stress caused by a chronic disease can lead to depression.

If you or a loved one have symptoms of depression, please discuss its diagnosis and treatment options with your physician.

Here are some warning signs of depression:

Feelings of sadness

While everyone feels sad sometimes, depression can cause lingering feelings of sadness, irritability, and anxiousness.

Loss of pleasure

People with depression may find that they no longer enjoy hobbies or activities that they previously enjoyed greatly.

Fatigue

Depression itself can cause feelings of fatigue and decreased energy. Some people have trouble getting out of bed or feel exhausted even after a good night’s sleep.

Trouble concentrating

Depression can make it difficult to concentrate and make decisions.

Changes in appetite

Depression can cause changes in appetite. Some patients may eat more than usual, while others may lose interest in food (even foods they used to enjoy).

Suicidal thoughts

Thoughts of death, suicide, or suicide attempts are symptoms of depression. If you or a loved one is considering suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline — 800-273-8255, or visit its website to chat online.
